Wayne State Recipient of the Lara Rutan Scholarship 2019

 
 Aimee Sassak
Aimee Sassak was born and raised in metro-Detroit. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience with a minor in Music. During her undergraduate studies she was a member and leader of the Flag Line of the Michigan Marching Band. She also performed with the Michigan Winter Ensemble and was an active member of Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band sorority. She worked at the University of Michigan Depression Center and volunteered with Military Support Programs and Networks as a child team member for their Strong Military Families and HomeFront Strong programs.

Upon graduating in 2015 she moved to Orlando, FL to intern with The Walt Disney Company in Entertainment. There she was able to learn communication strategies and the art of quality customer service. While in Orlando she also volunteered at Give Kids The World Village which is a nonprofit resort for children with critical illnesses.

Following her internship, Aimee moved back home to metro-Detroit and completed phlebotomy certification and began working as a medical scribe in the emergency


 

department.  She also received nurse aid certification and began working as a patient care technician on a cardiothoracic surgery progressive care unit. While gaining medical experience, she also coached color guard at the high school and collegiate level.

Since 2013 she has been volunteering for the Salvation Army in the food pantry and with the red kettle campaign.  She enjoys giving back to her community in any way that she is able and looks forward to serving her community as a PA in the future.

She is humbled and honored to receive this award. She would like to thank the Rutan Family and scholarship donors for their support.
