Kirk
grew up in Linden, MI and graduated
with a B.S. in Honors Nutrition and
Food Science from Wayne State
University. He knew that he wanted
to become a doctor since he was in
middle school, but it was not until
his Junior year at Wayne State
University that he became aware of
the PA profession, the extent of
their scope of practice, and the
vast opportunities available in the
career. After a short quarter life
crisis, he switched his goal to
becoming a PA and worked as a
Nursing Assistant at a Short-Term
Rehab facility and Henry Ford
Hospital to gain clinical
experience. At WSU, he served in
leadership roles in the Pre-PA
Society, RUN WSU, Cru, and
Alternative Spring Break Detroit. He
enjoyed getting involved in the
non-profit sphere of Detroit and
seeing how those organizations met
the needs of the community. One of
the highlights of his gap year was
when he spent five weeks in
Redlands, California, at a Whole
Person Care Preceptorship. During
this time, he learned to assess and
address patients’ emotional and
spiritual needs in addition to their
medical needs. His experiences with
patients and seeing the compassion
of other health professionals in the
program reinforced his decision to
become a PA and his goal to provide
compassionate and quality health
care to his patients.
In May 2017, he began PA school at
WSU. He has thoroughly enjoyed the
journey and the people he has formed
relationships with along the way. At
this point, he is unsure what field
of medicine he wants to pursue as a
career, but is eager to become Kirk
Bennett, PA-C in May 2019! He is
incredibly honored to be chosen to
receive the Rutan Scholarship and
wants to express his massive
gratitude to the Rutan Family and
scholarship donors for their support
in his endeavors. |
